As a way of celebrating the event, all members of the Wychwood community were involved in the following ways:
-
A locally sourced vegetarian lunch for all, with girls to request the size portions they intend to eat so that waste can be kept to a minimum if not totally avoided. Any money saved will go towards the purchase of a water butt or another recycling bin.
-
Over the weekend (4th/5th October) girls to make something using recycled/recyclable materials.
-
For a week girls will keep plastic milk bottles which will then be made into a sign/symbol/sculpture by the Study 1. This will alert everyone to the amount of plastic which we accumulate. This sculpture will remain in the school grounds for a period of time as a reminder to us all.
-
Girls were asked to bring in old batteries to school, and the Study 2 collected these and arranged for them to be recycled.
-
Everyone will be urged to be careful with electricity, and meter readings were taken to compare consumption on this day with another “normal” one.
-
Girls were encouraged to wear a green ribbon, which will be re-used on another occasion.
-
All those who can should find a greener way of coming to school that day.
-
Everyone in the school community were asked to write on a leaf shape (made from scraps of paper), stating what she (or he) has done to be more environmentally friendly. These leaves were later attached to a “tree trunk” in the entrance hall.
