Wychwood School | Psychology

Psychology

Psychology is a well-established subject at Wychwood and is taught at AS level with the vast majority of students choosing to complete the full A Level. 2007 has seen the exciting expansion of the department with the introduction of the new two year GCSE course for the UTs.

GCSE and A Level Courses

Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour. Through their studies students gain an understanding of what human beings have in common, how they differ and what promotes healthy intellectual, social and emotional development. We also look at the causes of abnormality and more common mental health issues such as stress.

Both the GCSE and A Level specifications are designed to foster the development of analytical skills and qualitative and quantitative research methods which are highly valued by universities and employers. All courses, therefore, involve:

  • Studying psychological theories, research studies, terminology, concepts and methods
  • Developing skills of analysis, interpretation and evaluation
  • Developing an understanding of different areas of psychology – cognitive, developmental, abnormal, physiological and social.
  • Designing, conducting and reporting investigations.
  • Developing an understanding of ethical issues and the British Psychological Society Ethical Guidelines

Visits, Trips and Courses

2 Girls visited local schools to collect data for their coursework. This gives the students an opportunity to practise their research skills in an unfamiliar setting.

AS students attend a revision conference in London . In March 2008 AS and A2 students have been fortunate enough to secure tickets to hear the former president of the American Psychological Society, Philip Zimbardo, talk about his study of ‘The Lucifer Effect’.
