PHYSICAL EDUCATION (OCR)
We follow the OCR GCSE Physical Education syllabus which covers a wide range of theoretical as well as practical elements.
The theoretical side consists of one written paper, carrying 40% of the total mark. The subject content of this paper is made up of 3 units:-
1. Factors Affecting Participation and Performance
2. The Relationship Between Health, Fitness and Practical Activity
3. Risk Assessment in Physical Activity
The practical side, including written coursework, carries 60% of the total mark. There are two aspects of the practical assessment:-
1. Planning, performing and evaluating (accounts for 50% of mark)
2. Analysing and improving (accounts for 10% of mark)
Each of these aspects is looked at within a variety of different sports that reflect the six National Curriculum areas of activity. Four chosen activities will then count as practical coursework marks. Assessment will be conducted and standardised internally and then moderated by a visiting OCR appointed moderator.
You need to be capable of taking part in a wide range of sporting activities and an enthusiasm and keenness to learn about all aspects of an activity is necessary. This could involve playing in a school team, umpiring games, organising teams etc. Some of this may be done outside the school timetable i.e. lunch times and after school.
The Physical Education course overall could be an asset to anyone wanting a career in many health related professions, the leisure industry or primary / secondary teaching.
