GEOGRAPHY (AQA)
In GCSE the syllabus specification provides a thematic people-environment approach, studying at all scales from local to global in different sections of the work. It is built on a series of human and physical topics. It provides opportunities to develop communication skills as well as developing application of number and the use of information technology to support learning.
Paper 1: accounts for 40% of the total marks and is based on “People and the Natural Environment”. It is composed of two sections:
The first section examines Geographical skills including Ordnance Survey Mapwork, use of photographs and satellite images.
The second section includes Physical Geography themes: Tectonic Activity, Rocks and the Landscape, River Landscapes, Coastal Landscapes, Weather and Climate and Ecosystems.
Paper 2: accounts for 35% of the total marks and is based on “People and the Human Environment”.
In this section we look at:
Settlement and where people live, especially the growth of towns and cities and their characteristics, problems and development issues.
Managing economic development through industrialisation, and examining globalisation as an answer to the LEDCs problems; examining the impact of industry and how development can be sustained without damage to the natural environment.
Contrasts in development, looking at economic, political and environmental conditions of countries and how they contribute to the difference in levels of development. We shall also look at the global product and fair trade and the importance of global citizenship.
Coursework: accounts for 25% of the total marks and this requires the pupil to choose a topic which relates to a part of the GCSE Specification, based on the fieldwork she participates in during the Trinity Term in Year 10. This is in preparation for writing and submitting a 2500 word account in Year 11.
