ENGLISH LITERATURE (AQA)
This syllabus gives candidates the opportunity to study literature in depth. Three texts are prescribed for coursework (30%) and three for the examination. Of these six texts to be studied in detail, three must be published before 1914. We are now integrating the English and English Literature coursework into a single folder and essays must be assessed against the two different sets of syllabus criteria. Candidates will need to demonstrate an understanding of literary tradition and an appreciation of social and historical influences and cultural contexts.
Texts will be carefully chosen to fulfil the coursework requirements and to prepare for the final examination. The examination questions will require analysis and evaluation of texts and consideration of language, form and structure.
The course aims to encourage girls to read, understand and respond to a wide range of literary texts, to appreciate the ways in which authors achieve their effects and to develop the skills necessary for literary study. Girls who choose this course should be prepared to read widely and independently to strengthen their understanding and to acquire more mature and fluent written style, both essential foundations for future advanced studies in English Literature.
