Wychwood School | Chemistry A Level

CHEMISTRY  OCR B (Salters)

Chemistry is a fascinating subject, combining a large amount of practical work with problem solving skills and relevance to every day life.

The new Salters specification is an exciting, ‘context-led’ course. Chemical concepts are introduced within a relevant context, the course being written as a series of teaching modules based on contemporary issues in chemistry. This allows a familiarity with a wide variety of vitally important topics such as modern materials, the synthesis and action of medicines, the chemistry of colour, modern analytical techniques, fuels and sustainable development.

There is a great emphasis on practical techniques throughout the course and one module out of three, at each level, will be based on internally assessed practical work.

At AS level this will be in five skill areas:

• Competence

• Measurement

• Analysis and Evaluation

• Observation

• Interpretation.

At A2 level this will comprise an extended practical investigation of the students’ choice.

The external assessment comprises two modules at AS and A2 level:

AS - Chemistry for Life, Elements of Life and Developing Fuels.

Chemistry of Natural Resources, Elements from the Sea, The Atmosphere and The Polymer Revolution.

A2 - Chemistry of Materials, What’s in a Medicine? The Materials Revolution, The Thread of Life, The Steel Story.

Chemistry by Design, Agriculture and Industry, Colour by Design, The Oceans and Medicines by Design.
